Sensorineural Hearing Loss occurs when there is damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain and is a permanent loss. It involves a reduction in sound level, or ability to hear faint sounds clearly. Causes include diseases, birth injury, drugs that are toxic to the auditory system, genetic syndromes as a result of noise exposure, viruses, head trauma, aging, and tumors.
 Baby Boomers are getting to retirement age, and are experience hearing loss. Some studies show that a far greater percentage of Baby Boomers are experiencing it than any previous generation. Surveys not only confirm the prevalence of hearing loss among Baby Boomers, it reveals that hearing loss is significantly impacting their lives at work, home and while traveling and is affecting men much more than women (62% to 38%).
